-Went to the show with the intention of behaving and only focusing on accessories this year. Specifically needed a Springfield 1911 magazine and was looking for holsters & slings. No joy on the magazine but did find a lovely holster for my Webley 1907 auto and a worn French sling for the MAS 36/44/49.
-Then stopped by to chat with Ken at the Augustus Antiques table of Swiss goodies. Always on the hunt for Swiss target sights for Schmidt Rubins but nothing this year. However, there was a gorgeous matching 1889 Schmidt Rubin taunting me. For years I focused on the other members of the Schmidt Rubin family, figuring I had plenty of time to eventually get around to adding an 1889 to the collection. Then in the last couple of years prices in these long rifles took off and the thought of getting a nice one for under $300 evaporated before my eyes. Decent condition examples from Simpson are selling in the $350 plus range and then you have shipping to boot (not cheap as these are loooong rifles). So I gave in and handed a check to Andrew, the owner of Augustus, and struck yet another item from the bucket list.
-Condition is excellent with a little thinning of the finish on the magazine. Otherwise it was well cared for. The bolt, chamber and bore look unfired. The cutoff lever has a stamped metal tab to keep the shooter from accidentally enabling the cutoff, which lowers the magazine to disable magazine feeding.
-Pulled and photographed the bolt to show the weak rear mounted lugs that made this rifle obsolete so quickly.
