Selling Used Rifle...Forgive My Ignorance

I have a rifle I'm selling, probably to someone in Maryland. It's a modern rifle, and I assume the transaction has to go through an FFL for the instant check...

right?



I can't just put it into the hands of the buyer without an FFL, I assume.



Am I correct? I sure as hell do not want to violate any laws.
