Non-Invasive Minnow options

mardi 31 mars 2015

Hey guys and gals, I was curious if anyone knew of any places in Frederick County that sells minnows (other than Fox's in downtown Frederick) ?

I want to be a good steward to our waters and not use pet store fish (Pretty sure that would be illegal anyway) and I know a few years back they started doing lots of research on invasive fishes introduced to our waters due to this sort of thing so just hoping some place around town sells minnows still. Seems all I can find are nightcrawlers / earthworms / waxworms /etc.

I know I could just catch my own if I was fishing the rivers but I was primarily interested for pond/lake fishing.

Thoughts? I have nothing against artificials but like to mix it up a little now and then.

Thanks

2015 camping thread - where are you going?

I just booked some camping 'lite' trips for the family. Weekend trips in various state parks including Gettysburg this weekend. Susquehanna and Elk Neck for a little fishing, maybe Tuckahoe as well. Greenbriar and hopefully Greenridge for hunting later in the year. Maybe finish off the year with a trip to Herrington or Swallowfalls. A few others still in the thought stage. Your basic family trips but we decided to get in at least one a month this year. Potentially adding a turkey hunt trip to Greenridge if my hunting partner is healthy enough. Nothing hardcore except the hunt but the wife and kid are up for the others.

Happy camping!

I am currently fitting my 1903a3 with a non-sporterized stock and now have this nice stock (although cut-down):

I was thinking making another shooter out of it - so what would be a good (caliber-wise) fit for this?

I was thinking of trying to go with a lighter caliber since it is a straight stock.

Ask your Eye Person - Depth Perception

Hi all,

Because we as shooters rely so much on our eyes for our skills, besides checking your eye dominance, ask for a depth perception test or stereopsis test. Ophthalmologists should have this in their office, maybe optometrists will, maybe not.

A depth perception test can be a really quick test on a Titmus II vision tester or newer equipment where you can determine how good your depth perception is with both eyes. This quick and dirty test can help explain why one might inexplicably miss more skeet/trap/sporting clays at distance. The Titmus II uses a 9-point scale from excellent (9/9) to very very bad 0/9).

You wouldn't believe how this measurement can vary in the population. I've had more than a few Soldiers come in for research that score 2/9 or 3-4/9 on a 9/9 possible scale (Titmus II). They had no idea.

Shouldn't cost anything extra. Might help you understand your own vision capabilities better.

Cheers,

Scribe556

Maryland Prairie Chicken

Two saturdays ago (March 21) my wife and I headed across the Bay Bridge to spend the day driving around Blackwater. About a mile after turning off 50, heading south, on 16 I think it was, I spotted this guy off the side of the road. Never seen one before in Maryland. The pic was taken with an iPhone through a pair of binoculars, so its not the greatest, but its what I had at the moment.

What do ya'll think? Game farm survivor? Wild?

Moving to Hanover

Couldn't find an apartment in Taneytown/Littlestown so I'm moving to Hanover., commuting to Fredneck. Like the town a lot from what I've seen. Can ya'll recommend some of the locals spots I otherwise wouldn't have known? Still love Taneytown and not too far but would love to know about any local dive bars, cool things to do, live music venues, etc. I'll eventually be switching residence to PA to save on taxes and be able to get a CHP...and be out of the iron liberal grip of Annapolis. Been to the bowling alley, think there's a Carhartt store in New Oxford and love the chocolate milk from Rutters :party29:

Closet for gun storage

I have been going round and round as to how to store and secure my firearms. I have a gun cabinet that is full and guns stashed everywhere throughout the house with trigger locks on them, but its getting a little out of hand. Talking with the wife I have 2 options realistically. Put a safe in one of the hall closets or get a reinforced door for the closet and use the whole closet.

I have measured and I can get a standard 24 gun safe in the closet. My issue with doing this is it limits my space I have to work with.

I really like the idea of getting a reinforced door with a bolt lock. I'm honestly just looking for something to keep the kids out of and a better storage option. In my search I am having problems finding a door that matches the rest of the doors in the house.

Looking for options here to solve my storage problems.

Latest Redding Auction finds

-It was just too damned cold for the Balt. Bicycling Club ride this morning so I hopped into the SAABaru and drove up to Gettysburg for the C&R packed auction today. Items of interest were a 480 round pack of Swiss 7.5mm GP11 ammo, a Finn M36 field cap, Winchester 52 mags and some .30 Luger ammo.

-There were a fair number of M91 Mosin Nagants, many Finn, along with a Finn Dragoon. The Dragoon was 1914 dated with AZF Austrian capture mark and 2 pc stock. A dark bore was the only downside and it certainly didn't dissuade bidders because it hammered at $475.

-The other Finn I was eyeballing was a 1917 dated Finn M91 PTG, also in a w a 2 pc stock. Sadly by the time this lot came up I had spent close to my limit and crossed my fingers hoping I could get it for under $300. Unfortunately I had to drop out when the bid to me was $325 and so it went to a lucky fellow for $300.

-The surprise was a SMLE No1 MKIII* "Dispersal" rifle that was in what I call the "Bargain Corner". Redding has been culling lesser items for auction in a second ring and this SMLE was in that bunch along with bubba'd Springfield 1903s and badly worn M91 Mosin Nagants. Lucky for me! Got it for $280 which pleased me to no end. I've listed it in a different thread for your consideration.

-Also got the GP11 ammo, which was the lot that drew me to the auction in the first place. The Post War Finn M36 field cap was pure luck. I had bid on a 1945 dated Swiss M43 cap along with a different Finn M36 cap on Saturday. Got the rare Swiss M43 for a whole $25 but was outbid on the Finn. So I was shocked to find another Finn M36 today in unissued condition and got it for $20, less than my bid the day before. I'd rather be lucky than good! Wasn't lucky enough on the Winnie 52 mags, all sold for more than you'd pay up on Evil Pay. Ditto for the .30 Luger ammo. Wasn't interested in paying above market for it.

-Hit the road early with plenty of lots left as I didn't trust my suspect will power. Better to leave with my bank account intact!

Vintage Sxs shotguns

Hello there, I am in need of a gunsmith. I've inherited 2 older (pre-war) side by side shotguns ( ah fox and jp clabrough)I had them tested a few years ago and they shot really well. I may have enjoyed the a little too much. Now one barrel isn't working in both. And there might be a little wiggle in the stock/ receiver of the fox. Anyway these are old and looking for someone who has experience/time/ability to take a look and conduct the repairs. I would really appreciate any advice on good smiths in the area.

Thanks

10/22 crown. What should I do?

I'm in Harford county. I recently bought a 10/22 for my son....and for me. It's very nice and at a great price too. Looking it over it had a few nicks in the crown. Question is should I spend the money to have a gunsmith re crown it? Or just get a different barrel? Not sure how much recrowning is and a new barrel is ball park $200. It will be for my son eventually when he learns his bolt action well enough to move up to the semi. It has never been shot. I may be over thinking it and wait to see how it does shoot before I go throwing money away on something I may not need. It's a 10/22 stainless with synthetic stock. Also, does the bolt hold open normally on this model? Never owned one before and this one with the mag in does not. Thanks for the help

Best handgun to get my wife into shooting?

Looking to get my wife into shooting and just comfortable handling a handgun. Will be signing her up for a handgun training class, but looking for suggestions on a gun. Looking for something with a little more umph than just a .22, but want the recoil to me manageable for her and not make her afraid of it. What caliber would you suggest? And for a semi-auto what manufacturer and should I look into. Has to be a relatively small grip for her hands.

Finally found my Dispersal SMLE

I've got a rather large collection of Enfield rifles, a fact that has been front and center recently as I've been updating my inventory list for insurance. One item that has eluded me for many years is a decent example of a BSA SMLE No1 MKIII* "Dispersal" rifle. The last example I had a shot at was back in 2008 at a local auction. But bidding was aggressive and I dropped out when it went above my personal limit. Had no clue that it would take another 7 years to find one!

The name Dispersal comes from the action that BSA took in 1940 when their Small Heath SMLE factory was taken out of operation from numerous Luftwaffe bombing raids. BSA moved machinery and also subcontracted to many small manufacturers throughout England, in essence "dispersing" the production to make it more difficult for the Germans to interrupt.

The most obvious sign that a SMLE is a BSA dispersal rifle is the intentional omission of "SA Co" from the "BSA Co" mark on the buttsocket. So all you see is a "B" mark. Just as the Germans used manuf. codes in an attempt to shield manufacturing information from their enemies the British stopped identifying BSA as the manufacturer of these SMLEs.

I've got a 1940 dated L series BSA SMLE that was produced using commercial parts just before Small Heath was bombed so you can see the difference in markings. This one is a MKIII so it has the cutoff that was deleted from the M series MKIII* dispersal that I acquired.

Both rifles were 90's Century imports, probably from Greece. The Dispersal came from today's Redding Auction and was soaked in grease, never cleaned since it went into storage.

AR-10 Stock

New to the world of AR10's. I will soon be putting my PSA AR10 lower to use and had a question about stocks. Will a regular AR stock work or are there specific ones just for the AR-10? I have a Magpul carbine stock kit laying around and wanted to put it to good use.

Need help identifying these WWII rifles - Part II - German K98?

Hello.

This morning, a new friend asked me to check out the rifles his father had brought back from WWII.

Would anyone be able to offer their insight to what they see?

I believe they have both have had their stocks either replaced or made to suit hunting or target shooting.

One rifle is a German K98 (This posting) and the other is a Japanese Type 99 7.7mm Arisaka (Please see Part I - Japanese, Type 99, Arisaka? posting)

I had to break the posting up into two parts, as the maximum number of pictures to upload is 10.

German K98? (Please see attached pictures DSC00318-DSC00327):

All numbers appear to match except for what I see as a modified stock.

The stock does have clearance for scope rings, but I am not sure if that is standard for all K98 rifles.

I am not sure if the front sight has been replaced or if it is original.

It's obvious that the rear sight is a Redfield sight.

This is what I found online from the "CE" stamp on top of the receiver:

"CE 43 ,is a K98 Mauser made by J.P. SAUER und Sohn, GEWEHRFABRIK, SUHL , Germany, 1943, WWII"

Eagles are stamped on the side and it appears to bare a 43, for year of manufacture.

Thanks for any information anyone offers.

Sincerely,

Dean

Specifically, he is looking for:

1) Identification of caliber

2) Value

3) Desirability for a collector.

4) Anything special or distinct about these relics?

5) Their application (Sniper, general use, home guard, etc.)

I am attempting to attach pictures to help with identification.

Japanese Type 99 Arisaka? (Please see attached pictures DSC00309-DSC00317):

All numbers appear to match.

I did communicate that the chrysanthemum was defaced on purpose, before surrender, so the soldier would retain honor to the empire of Japan.

And that it is harder to find one that was not defaced (someone please correct me if I'm off here).

The sights and stock appear to have been replaced with American parts.

Thanks for any information anyone offers.

Sincerely,

Dean

RIO target ammo on sale

Just a heads up for those who may have interest. DSG has Rio target loads on sale for $54.80/flat. I used a $10 coupon and got two flats at $49.80 each + tax. Haven't used Rio target loads yet, but cheap = good in my book for busting clays.

Problem with e-file form 1

Has anyone heard of any problems with the e-file system today or this weekend? i have been trying to submit a form 1 for a SBR but I keep getting kicked back to the first page (where you choose the form you want to e-file) when I hit the pay prompt. This has happened 3 times. I guess I will call them tomorrow.

Prochrono options

I'm firming up my options selection for Prochrono digital chronograph, and I have a couple questions

1. I downloaded the android controller app to my phone. It installed but bricked the unit. Had to reboot to regain control of the phone and uninstall. Has anyone used this app with an android phone? if so, which OS? I have 2.3.4, which isn't the latest. It bricked looking for a chronograph (which wasn't available) so perhaps with a chrono available it would work fine.

2. The web site said the app doesn't allow changing shot strings. If that's the case, its useless IMHO.

3. Does the wired windows program allow changing shot strings?

4. Can the android app and the wired remote be used together, or do they both plug into the same port?

New Punisher Dissipator Build - Just Because

A little show-off thread. Picked up a couple of AR lowers from 2A Sales & Supplies (thanks guys!) and used one to build up a new range plinking toy. I have an XM177 pattern AR with an 11.5 inch barrel and wanted to complement it with something with better reach and power.

Nothing fancy. A Del-ton 16 inch dissipator upper as I like the rifle length hardware, replaced the handguard with a quad-rail, slapped on a cheap BSA holosight (my uber-crap NcStar one on my XM177 still holds zero), replaced the stock grip with a Magpul MIAD grip (another part I love) and added a flip backup rear sight. Tossed the collapsible stock in the parts bin as I prefer fixed stocks.

Only gripe was a missing hammer spring from the Del-ton LPK so I had to borrow one from another set I had lying around.

Just about the same cost as a stock Colt or equivalent. Balances pretty well being a not particularly muzzle heavy. A DCM buttstock weight should balance it perfectly. Now I just need to get it to the range and see how it shoots and cycles. Now if I can just find a compatible dissipator bayonet...

Aluminum Welding Work Needed

We have a aluminum jon boat that has a small "gash" in the bottom. Thew "gash" looks to be no more than an inch long. Ideally, we'd like to get it welded up as a permanent repair. Potential problem is that it's located directly under the center seat and therefore, presumably, there's flotation foam on the inderside of the hole.

Can it be repaired? Anyone know of a welder that would do this kind of work? The boat is located in the Laurel/Bowie area.

Open to suggestions. Well meaning ones anyway. :)

Edit: Having a problem posting a pic. Will keep trying.

My Bubba'd Auction Buys

I was at a local auction the other night and a K31 followed me home.

I know its been cut down, has no sights, sidemount scope added, but it is numbers matching. Whoever did the stock obviously was good at wood working, as the scope inletting is nice and precise. They installed sling mounts and a Browning buttpad.

I do wish he would've had a piece of birch to work with, instead of that piece of plywood.

For a gun that seems oil-free at the moment, everything moves silky smooth. The bore appears shinier than some of my new purhases.

I had intentions of flipping it but just may keep it. Even Bubba'd up it seems really nice.
