Greetings,
I have a 19.5 dated Nambu Type 94, May 1944. When I received it the safety was loose, floppy and didn't work. I tried to adjust it and broke it in two. I'm assuming since this is a late war Type 94 that the poor safety is just a part of the overall lack of quality at that time. The pistol looks good, not too terribly bad machining. I haven't fired it yet. I had Don Schlickman make me some replacement safeties and he did a great job. I can't tell the difference. The new one looks and fits exactly like the original. Since I have a couple replacement safeties I'm thinking about trying to modify it so it will work. The magazine safety works great.
If I can affix some sort of shim to the bottom of the safety arm maybe it will take up the slack and keep it tight so it won't fire with the safety on. In the pictures below, one is with the safety on, the other, the safety is on and the trigger is pulled. Notice how the safety is pushed out allowing the pistol to fire. As I said, the original safety did the same thing so it's not a problem with Mr. Schlickman's replacements.
The third picture shows how the safety tab is shorter than the notch in the frame, the original is the same way. If I have Mr. Schlickman make me one with the tab the same length as the notch maybe the safety will fit and work better. I'll email him the pictures and see what he thinks. I must stress that his replacements are exactly as the original I broke.
