The daily derp. Belt problems

lundi 20 avril 2015

I just bought a High Speed Gear 1.5" rigger belt for concealed carry. The belt is extremely well made and very comfortable but there's just one problem. It doesn't fit through any of my belt loops! I'm so aggravated that I didn't bother trying to thread it through while in the shop. Hopefully they'll return or exchange it for me.

FFL's can modify mags prior to sale - ship them to free state

Is it written online anywhere that states FFL's can modify magazines with a greater capacity than 10 rounds, to accept 10 rounds prior to transfer or sale of a firearm?

OR, is it written anywhere that states the FFL can legally ship the magazines to a neighboring state?

I am looking for a bill, or some sort of official document stating this. An FFL I deal with from time to time said the MSP told him he is not allowed to modify magazines or ship them out of state but it is my understanding he IS in fact allowed to do either one.

Brass shotgun shell priming

I have a box of new 12 ga. Brass shells made by Giulio Fiocchi Lecco in Italy. They need the #57 primer which is about .025 smaller than the current 209. Would it be possible to open the primer pocket to fit the 209. Don't want to ruin the brass it not feasible. Any suggestions?

Caliber conversion on a Savage short-action

Since there's been a few people that have asked, I'm going to do a down and dirty outline on how hard/easy it is to re-barrel a Savage 10 short-action.

Tools needed:

Barrel nut wrench - Wheeler has a decent set available at Midway, you WILL need it. http://ift.tt/1F6ZtSF

Receiver/action wrench - some say you can do with just barrel blocks, that wasn't my experience. Also available at Midway - http://ift.tt/1F6ZtSN

Go/No-Go gauges.

Sturdy bench-vise.

Rubber mallet, and a 2lbs. hard face mallet.

3/8" Torque wrench - optional, but I'd suggest using it if you have one available.

**Now there CAN be more needed parts if you're changing to a different caliber. Example - I swapped from a .223Rem to a .260Rem, so I needed a .308 bolt head and the related internal magazine parts since the .260 is a larger round that's based off the .308 case.

The roster has officially gone full-stupid

Latest announced updates to the handgun roster:
http://ift.tt/1G07c15

I literally cannot believe this idiocy.

First, they're approving the Phoenix Arms HP25A. This gun is a blatant Saturday Night Special - that is to say, the kind of gun that the roster was put in place to NOT approve.

Second, they've decided that a MP5 reverse stretch pistol is now an assault pistol, despite the fact that it is NOT PARTS COMPATIBLE with the SP89! This joins the Uzi 22lr pistol and Bushmaster AR pistols list of complete screwups on the roster. What makes it double-plus stupid is that they approved the POF-5 without any such caveat, despite it being THE SAME GUN.

When is MSI going to spend some resources interceding on this issue? Whomever the hell is giving the "copy of" information to the roster board needs to be removed and replaced with someone competent who gives a damn.

HoCo crime spree with gun thefts

I ran across this and was a little shocked at the number of people involved as well as how many guns were stolen.
Six suspects charged in string of Howard County burglaries

Quote:

The burglaries, according to police, include:

• 6400 block William Street, Elkridge, Feb. 12. A ground-level window was discovered broken. Several guns and televisions were stolen.

• All The Trimmings, Dayton, Feb. 15 and March 4. In both incidents, locks to several trailers were broken. Backpack blowers and landscaping tools were stolen.

• 7400 block of Hickory Log Circle, Columbia, March 22. The rear basement sliding glass door to the residence was broken and jewelry and electronics were stolen.

This is one tough hombre. He intentionally buries 5 fishhooks in himself to show various techniques to get them out. As he says in his intro warning, it's tough to watch but educational if you're ever out fishing and need to remove them yourself.

Even so, you'd never catch me doing a video like this:

York IWLA April FunShoot

All rumors of an FNH sponsored FunShoot, have been greatly exaggerated! The FNH Sponsored event has been cancelled by FNH. Sad really.....

Therefore,

This month we will be hosting a 5 stage FunShoot, in our traditional manner, all in the back pits (you gotta see 'em to believe 'em!).

I see handguns, handgun caliber carbines, and shotguns, shot in either pistol only, carbine only or pistol/shotgun fashion. This months setup does not lend itself to two long guns.

Round count will be in the 75-100 target range, fee is $20/adults, $5 for under 18 I should think, and we will use our usual scoring options of timed, points and IDC.

This shoot can be shot with lots of movement, or very little, on a timer or off, by the experienced or the novice. Bring your friends and family. We are very new shooter and kid friendly, all we ask is that all shooters know how to handle their firearms safely.

Signup will be in the back by the big shed, starting at 8:15 am-ish, safety brief 'round 8:45 with shooting by 9, parking is limited back there, so park up front if you can.

Please sign up at yorksignup@gmail.com.

To flute or not to flute...

Just acquired a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 7mm-08 and am planning what all I want to do before next hunting season. As some of you may know, my shoulder can be quite recoil sensitive, although this will be used almost exclusively for hunting so there won't be too many shots in a row.

My first plan of action is to get a Boyd's Featherlight Thumbhole stock (most likely in pepper laminate)

Next will be to find someone to help me bed the action into the new stock.

I also will replace the bolt shroud with an aluminum one and replace the bolt handle.

Then I am probably going to drop it off at Scott's to have the barrel threaded and a brake installed.

Now - I am wondering if it worth the extra cost and time to get the barrel fluted while Scott's has it or not...from what I can tell, fluting's only real advantage is to assist with barrel cooling.

To flute or not to flute...

Very High Scope Mounting

I'm interested in folks thoughts about a very high scope height on a precision rifle.

Right now I have a Vortex 2.5-10x42 PST FFP and have a 6-24x50 PST FFP arriving later this week from SWFA (woo hoo). I can't really afford super high end glass so these two scopes were my compromise and I like both of them a lot. I have been looking at QD 1-piece rings for a while. I want to take these two scopes and mount them on multiple rifles for target shooting and hunting. I know this will involve compromises. I looked at the various QD mounts from LaRue, GG&G, ADM and others but kept coming back to the fact that I don't really need QD. I just need a solid return to zero. I intend to check zero every time I mount the scopes so they won't be getting switched around more than 3 or 4 times a season. So I went with a Badger one piece 20 MOA mount figuring it was impossible to go wrong with Badger. I set it up on a Savage Hog Hunter with a 0 MOA EGW base and the center of the scope is 2.44" above the center of the bore. Holy crap is that scope high! High enough that I ordered an adjustable kydex cheek rest for the tupperware stock.

So in looking at JBM with a 2.44" height over bore and using both a 165 Gr GameKing and a 175 Gr MatchKing (the 2 loads I'll be using) I don't really see a problem. I'd have to hold 2.2 MOA to shoot 5 yards (for a matchstick challenge at a precision shoot) and .5 MOA at 50 yards which is as close as I'd expect a deer to come but both of those are pretty reasonable. Both rounds crest at about 100 yards so with that zero I'm only ever adjusting in one direction.

For the Rem 700 precision rifle I have a choice of a NightForce 20 MOA rail and the lowest possible 2 piece Badger rings or a Badger 0 MOA rail and a set of the same 20 MOA rings as pictured here. Those rings are not yet purchased.

Other than looking goofy, what are folks thoughts on this setup? I believe that with an adequate cheek rest it will not be particularly uncomfortable. What other compromises should I expect to have to make?

Lawn Care (Mowing)

I am looking for a mower in the myersville area. We have an incredibly steep hill and although I have been mowing it for the past year my time has become extremly valuable and I would rather have someone do this instead of me spending an hour and a half taking care of the yard each week.

Anyone know of anyone that will do steep hills?

Lawn Care (Mowing)

Hi from Annapolis

Hi all. I figured I'd introduce myself before I start posting dumb questions ;).

I'm a full-time student at UMCP and work retail LP; I'm also a card-carrying pro-gun liberal, which I doubt will come up in conversation here :innocent0. I shoot rifle, pistol, and shotgun; mostly shotgun lately as it's the most convenient and PG Trap & Skeet is pretty great bang for the buck, so to speak. It's also been the most fun for my two most recent converts to the shooting sports, and none of the asinine handgun transport laws interfere with grabbing lunch afterward.

Anyway, I'm glad to be a part of the huge and vocal 2A community in MD!

Hi from Annapolis

New M1903 with a C stock

Dupage Trading recently posted a couple of M1903s for sale and this one caught my eye for one, and only one reason- the pre-WWII C stock attached to it! So, while the rifle may be a mixmaster, it is a perfect candidate for Camp Perry use.

Springfield Armory didn't manufacture a whole lot of the pre-war C stocks carrying the drawing number D1836. Most of them went to NM rifles while the service rifles received the plentiful S stock as replacements. The stocks not chewed up during the war seem to have been hoarded by collectors and shooters and consequently, I've never seen one for sale in decent shape.

The pre-war C stock is slimmer and features a different grip profile from the wartime manufactured C stocks from manufacturers such as Keystone and American Bowling and Billiard. Some people claim that it is a more comfortable stock but I don't have a wartime C stock so I can't comment on that aspect.

The rifle is in the 1.43 million range with it's original SA 10-32 barrel and a nickel steel bolt. The stock has been stamped with a Greek rack number but retains a decent SA/SPG cartouche.

As nice as it looks, the stock wasn't quite properly fitted. The barrel wasn't settling properly so I very, very carefully broke out a chiesel and sand paper and dropped the action a tiny bit further into the stock. It's still not as tight as a new production stock but I think the results speak for themselves:

100-2X at 100 yards- unsupported prone with 168gr handloads

For me, the C stock really is a much more comfortable option than the S stock, especially in offhand. The pistol grip allows the shooter to get a better grip on the rifle and pull it in toward the shoulder.

Thurmont and Camp Perry should be a good amount of fun this summer

New M1903 with a C stock

Steyr Hahn reloading

Not sure whether or not I should put this in reloading or C&R, but since it deals with a C&R pistol load, figured I would start here.

So have a mismatched pistol (Chilean frame, Romanian slide), seems little stiff to rack the slide, but then it could just be how the gun is.

Tried 4 loads so far in the pistol, all of them using 9MM Steyr brass from starline and Lee .38 Super die set.

1. HS6: 5.9 GR, 115 FMJ 9MM (Round fires, at 25 feet, it drops roughly 12-16 inches and does not eject)

2. HS6: 6.0/6.1, 115 FMJ (round fires, drop is roughly 8 inches, does not eject)

3. HS6: 6.2, 115 FMJ, (round fires, maybe 2-3 inches of drop which could be me at this point, slide partially comes back maybe 1/2 inch exposing the brass, no ejection)

4. HS6: 6.3, 115 FMJ (Round fires, brass is tipped up and caught as the slide comes back forward.) Had one round actually eject at the end of testing, however, I do not think the slide came all the way back as it should have locked open.

I tested 5 rounds per load, single loading each one.

Next test will be 6.5 and 6.7 gr HS6. I would have thought those loads should have cycled the action however. Seen loads up to 7.2 gr of HS6, but going up slowly (I do not have a chronograph.)

One thing I noted while loading, I had to run each and every round back through the sizing die after seating the bullet or they would not chamber. (tried 1.28, 1.29, 1.30, 1.31 OAL and still had to do this, I made dummy rounds, brass and bullet for testing purposes). As I do not have a factory crimp die for 38 Super or 9MM Steyr, this was the compromise to start working.

Anyone have ideas or suggestions? (BTW, I only have HS6 and Lil'Gun to test with.)

Steyr Hahn reloading

"somewhat budget" precision rifles...

Ok. So I was going to get back into precision rifles, but things happened (including SCSC losing it's range), and I never got around to it.

Anywho, I'ma thinking about it again. Since last time I had a dedicated precision rig (GAP SCLE w/Leupy 3.5-10 M3), I've had kids, bought a house, etc. sooooo I'm on a more strict budget.

That being said, I've been looking at a Rem AAC-SD, Tikka CTR, FN SPR A1A, Other? All in .308.

Here's how I see things...

Remington 700 AAC SD

PROS

  • Parts etc. everywhere

    Good rep for accuracy

    Price point

CONS

  • It's a "new" Remington (J Lock, spotty QC, etc)

Crappy stock that will get replaced

    Need to buy mounts

    Trigger work will be needed

Tikka CTR

PROS

  • Great action

    Very high quality barrel

    Good trigger

    Built-in Pic rail

Threaded barrel (should I ever get a can)

    Bottom metal that's actually metal

TRG 22 mags that will take "long" reloads (even though I don't reload yet)

CONS

  • Harder to find

A couple $100 more expensive than the Remington

Stock seems kind of "meh", but from all I've read there are no problems with it

FNH SPR A1A

PROS

  • Proven action

High quality barrel that will pretty much outlast me

    McMillan A5 stock

    Pic rail included

CONS

  • EXPENSIVE

Now, as for "other" I was thinking of either finding a used Rem 700 (or a Walmart special) and gradually getting the parts together and have a 'smith put it together. The other alternative was a Howa, but I really don't know much about them.

Savage rifles just don't do it for me.

Now, I'm thinking that if I go with the AAC, by the time I get it to the level of the Tikka or the FNH, I could very possibly end up spending more than if I got either of the other rifles. Or, are my Remington concerns overblown, and it's a great rifle "as is"?

The only thing I could see replacing on the Tikka would be the stock, which also puts it in the FNH price point.

IMO, the FN would pretty much only need a scope and ammo.

What are your thoughts on the notion of getting a used Rem 700 "donor" and building it up? I figure a "Walmart special", sell the factory stock and barrel, a decent barrel, and Magpul stock (or maybe choate or bell and carlson) and I could be into it for less than a grand.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

What is the most chicken$#$% reason for a ticket?

I just got a ticket out on I-495. I got picked out of a line of traffic right at the I-494 & I-95 split. MY crime? The dealer installed license plate frame covered the lower 3/4 inch of the Maryland Plate with his name. Its that part of the plate that says www.maryland.gov or Treasure the Chesapeake. The ticket was for "obscuring the license plate"

Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for a more chicken%$#^ reason?

Blue Fins Open House Saturday 4/25/15

Blue Fins has now moved to 701 Wise Ave. in Dundalk which is right across the street from their previous location. On Saturday 4/25/15 from 11-2 they are having a new grand opening with hot dogs and hamburgers. Their will be hourly door prizes and some really nice prize drawings as well as big discounts on everything. I've been in the new store and it's really very nice. Much more room than the old store and easier access and better visibility. Dave and Jamie are good people. I've done quite a bit of business there over the last couple years and they've always been great to me. Hope everyone can come out and support a local business with their new grand opening. :party29:

Question about gas key

samedi 18 avril 2015

I finally found out why one of my ARs was not running. The gas key was loose :mad54: I have put maybe 1000 rounds through this rifle. The gas key was staked. I ended up replacing the screws holding it on, per the armorer at the range I was shooting at. But that leaves me scratching my head. Why, with this few rounds, did the gas key loosen up enough to cause malfunctions? I've easily put more rounds than that through another AR I have and that one didn't have the gas key staked. This is a Spike's Tactical M-16 BCG.

Looking for a Range Buddy

Hello, All,

I am looking for a range buddy to introduce me to the AGC range and assist me in finding the right club to join. I have been shooting pistols indoors (at paper) and shotguns (at live and clay targets) for years, but not so much recently. I also acquired an AR about two years ago, but because of time constraints and lack of an introduction to AGC, have not shot it yet. I have promised myself that this Spring, that will change. So, I am looking for a new friend (or friends) that would be willing to introduce me to AGC and help me learn about shooting my AR (it is a piston gun, so please no piston haters). I also have a black powder cap-and-ball revolver that I would love to learn about. My schedule now probably isn't open until after Mother's Day, so I am trying to plan ahead. Please let me know if anyone is willing to help me.

Thanks!

Do ATF Regulation changes start as soon as published?

Really concerned I am going to be blocked from NFA items if the new ATF regulation changes go through in May. I want to get a subgun suppressor, but not sure I have enough time for a Form 3 and Form 4 and the last thing I want is to get stuck with a suppressor I can't transfer to myself. Do the changes start as soon as published, or is there a delay until they actually take effect?

Some Observations about ZDP-189 Steel

I am no blade steel expert - but I am a knife enthusiast. I have been reading posts from various folks about ZDP-189. Some stuff I have gleaned:

1. The steel is so hard that one guy used his ZDP-189 Endura to scrape an aluminum block before changing out a gasket. He claims he actually shaved aluminum metal off with it - yet it was still razor sharp afterwards. Guess that's why they call it a "super steel".

2. Another claim - where a guy uses his ZDP-189 blade (back spine) to sharpen cheap knives made out of soft steel.

3. On the down side - another guy used his Spyderco Stretch, ZDP-189, to cut CATV wire and the copper core made a nice size chip in the blade (saw results in a You Tube video). So ZDP-189 is very brittle. He was using the factory edge - maybe a different bevel would have helped (?)

4. Numerous complaints say it will rust, pit, or stain easily if you are not careful.

5. Still more complaints that it takes a lot of effort to sharpen. Would probably help to have a sharpening system designed for very hard steel. Not sure the standard Spyderco sharpening system would handle it without buying additional rods.

The last three points have really made me hesitate to get a knife with a really hard "super steel".

Just picked up WW AR 15 HBC

My first AR15, haven't fired it yet, waiting on ammo, picked up a couple 30 and 40 rnd magpul mags in Leesburg Va. After staring at while I catch myself drooling at its magnificent beauty I noticed it has a bird cage fire suppressor, I knew that, and telescopic stock, obvious, and what looks like a bayonet assessable feature at the bottom of the front site. Yikes, should I be concerned? That's more than one banned feature. I'm freaking out a little. Can someone clarify before I call the dealer on this. Thanks y'all.

Going to the Range.. Covert or Overt?

Do you try to hide your rifles from neighbors when heading to the range?

Use some type of concealment/undercover type case?

Use normal rifle cases and act like normal person loading the vehicle?

Carry the EBR's out sans cases to see the scared children and hear the lamentations of their mothers?

Just curious what others do, I personally use plain old soft cases and load my truck as if I was loading anything else and not worry to much about who might have a problem with. Except for using tennis racket bags for my ak pistol and underfolder, but that's just for my own amusement(I do not have the look of someone on his way to tennis). :D

I do keep aware of who is around and load the guns last though. Don't need some dumb kid trying to grab something out of my truck while my back is turned.

My grandparents have a farm 15 mins from my house so i grew up hunting, shooting tin cans and paper targets pretty much all my life.

Magpul Rem 700 SA Magwell

There is some speculation that the new Magpul magwell will be a drop in fit for Remington bottom metal in any stock, not just the new Magpul stock. I've pre-ordered two to find out. I also pre-ordered on of the stocks, but it would be really nice if these magwells were a drop in fit for my HS precision stocks. I'm sure it won't work in every application, but if it works in mine it's worth a try. 70$ compared to roughly 250$ minimum to use AICS mags? Game changer.

Handgun Roster question

Does anyone know the boards current stance on adding new handguns to the list that do not come with magazines less than 11 rounds? It doesn't look like they have purged the list of existing entries that fit that bill. I really have my eye on a Sig P320 but its not on the list and you can't get it with a 10 round mag. Its the only handgun that might convince me to get the HQL. Yes I realize the hastle of having to buy it out of state, stripping the mag out, and sending to a MD FFL for final transfer. But what ever plan I would come up with to get it here legally is moot if its not on the list.

Need Remington 600 Stock

Been off-and-on looking for one for a while. There are two .308 Remington 600s that have been in my Dad's safe for my whole life. One is complete but the other is a complete rifle sans a butchered stock that some twit tried to cut off. Neither have been fired in my lifetime but they aren't new.

Been thinking about using the rifle with the butchered stock for a project of some kind but first I need a decent stock for it.

Hornady vs. RCBS

New to reloading. I'm currently using a pair of Lee Loaders. Looking to upgrade to a single stage press. Eyeballing a RCBS Rockchucker and the Hornady Lock N Load with the quick change bushings. More interested in precision than reloading bulk. Not looking for a huge debate to kick off, just an opinion on these two presses.

brady campaign lawyers withdraw from gun lawsuit

This is just funny enjoy this guys

http://ift.tt/1EcLKe9

Quote:

A long-awaited trial pitting two wounded Milwaukee police officers against the gun store that sold the weapon used to shoot them has been delayed after attorneys from a national gun control group posted information online that the judge had ruled inadmissible.

The lawsuit, filed in 2010 against Badger Guns and its predecessor, Badger Outdoors, by officer Bryan Norberg and former officer Graham Kunisch, is the first of its kind nationwide to make it this far. It had been scheduled to begin Monday and last three weeks.

The case, however, is not dead. It has been transferred to another Milwaukee County judge and it is due next in court in September. Separately, two other wounded Milwaukee police officers have sued the gun-selling operations. Their case is set to go to trial later.

Milwaukee County Judge Jeffrey Conen on Monday allowed attorneys Jonathan Lowy and Alla Lefkowitz of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence to withdraw from the case. They were representing Norberg and Kunisch along with local attorney Patrick Dunphy.

Conen ordered Brady to pay $800 to Milwaukee County, the cost of paying 100 jurors who were called for jury selection for half a day. It was an extra large pool, more than double what judges typically summon.

..............................

In court Monday, Conen admonished Lowy for the conduct and ordered the lawyers not to discuss any more of the materials in public "contrary to the laws of ethics or the rules of ethics in the state of Wisconsin."

"I don't how things are practiced in Washington, D.C., or New York or anywhere else, but out here in the Midwest we have certain rules. ... This is something that cannot be done, and it cannot be done through surrogates," Conen said, according to the transcript. "The whole idea is to have a fair trial for absolutely everyone."

Well, even after hearing all the horror stories about how easy it is to break the extractor, and being as careful as possible, mine broke tonight while trying to check the damned headspace. :sad20:

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to find a replacement, or someone to contact to get one made?

I am going to see if one of the machinists at my work can do it, but they really aren't supposed to do stuff like that at work. Luckily I am on night shift, so that may increase my chances.

Thanks for any suggestions. :sad20:

Anyone able to get a Jaricho before they sold out ?

Cerakote question.

Looking for advice. I picked up a Winchester 94 Trapper model in 30-30. It is perfect mechanically but the receiver has seen better days. No major holes but it does have some pitting and a bit of surface rust in places.

Would it be wise to cerakote it or would I need to have the receiver smoothed somehow before doing so? I have zero experience with cerakoting. Thanks for any help.

Rod n reel tournament Saturday may 2nd

I have a charter booked up for the rod n reel rockfish tournament. Extending the offer here for anyone interested in coming. It'll be an all day trip. Boat leaves around 5am, and must be docked to weigh in fish by 3pm.

Cost will be dependent on how many people go. Right now I have 5 friends and family going. I'd like to get the charter up to 8 folks, so that we can get plenty of take home fish for everyone, and try for a tournament winner.

The boat is the Katherine, docked at Abners crab house in Chesapeake beach. coast guard certified for up to 22 people. I've known the captain and mate for a very long time. Always had good success during trophy season.

single action 1911 vs dao semi auto

OK, in another thread I asked about semi auto vs revolver.

Now I'm going to ask about single action vs dao semi auto. So as not to have to buy another caliber, how is the trigger pull on a dao semi auto vs a 1911. I could leave the 1911 in condition 3 (cocked and locked) or buy a semi auto DAO like the S&W 4553, 4516 etc.

What's your thoughts. I'll probably have to a range and try a dao.

Thanks,

Maryland Small Arms Range Gripe

I really dislike MSAR (just wanted to put that out there) but it's the only gun store anywhere near my home that I'm willing to patronize so I stop in every so often just to take a look around. So I go in yesterday and decide to make small talk with the guy at the hand gun counter, big mistake. I ask about the two newest Glock models (G40 and G43) and if they had been added to the handgun roster, well no sooner than the word "Glock" left my lips did the guy fly off the handle saying that Glocks were junk, that gen 3's and 4's were trash, that you couldn't GIVE him a Glock if you wanted to, blah blah blah. And then adds "That's why I buy Smith and Wesson".

I let him finish and think to myself "If I managed this store I would fire this fool and everyone like him." And not because I'm some huge Glock fan, but because this guy is a SALESMAN in a gun store that just completely bashed an entire brand of pistols that the very store he's working in has in stock, on the shelf, in big numbers.

On top of the fact that he never actually answered my question. Has either gun been added to the handgun roster and if not, what is the process and how long does it usually take?

Value of this LMT barrel?

I bought a used LMT SBR upper a while back. I just swapped out the barrel for a Noveske 300blk. I have no use for this LMT barrel (5.56) as I already have a 10.5" 5.56 SBR. As you can see by the photo below, it is used. Previous owner said around 4K rounds through it. Barrel markings are MP 5.56 1/7 CB. I've seen new ones go for $300+. What is a fair price to ask for this? Thanks in advance.

Cleaning Guns in Back Yard?

Probably an obvious question, but I was just wondering.

I live in Baltimore, got a rowhouse with a decent sized back yard. I have a neighbor on each side that, if they were in their yard, could look over and see me in my backyard.

Could I legally do some gun maintenance and/or cleaning in my backyard? Something tells me 'no', but what if I talked to them beforehand and said 'I'm just going to clean some of my guns, please don't call the cops on me'? Does that have a possibility of working?

Mag issues when buying guns online...

I have purchased a few guns from Budsgunshop prior to the mag capacity limit being changed without any issue. I'm now in the market for another gun however I can't find any 10 round versions on the website. Do I still have it shipped to a MD FFL and they just take my mags prior to turning the gun over to me or is it simply illegal to send the weapon at all to the FFL? Tried to search through the forums but couldn't find this issue being specifically addressed. Thanks!

Selling banned rifle to VA resident

I have an issue that needs clarification. I have a now banned rifle that I'm selling and have a buyer lined up in Virginia. The buyer assured me that this can be done via a private transaction and can just use a bill of sale.

The law as I interpret it, is that any transactions between residents of different states require you to make the sale through an FFL. Am I correct in assuming this?

Thanks

HD Moss. 590 old/new...

I have a high bed and keep this in a shotgun scabbard attached to the heavy bed frame wedged inbetween it and dresser, so the stock barely poked out. For the longest time I had Pachmayr Vindicator furniture set on it, but pistol grip only guns are pretty miserable to shoot.

A couple of months ago I purchased an "as new" Mil./Pol. stock set from Numrich and had John at Duffy's do a simple refinishing job on it. I then tried to figure out a way to install a flashlight that wasn't too tactical/took away from the look of the gun, but most importantly would still be slim enough to fit into that scabbard.

I ended up going with the Mission First Tactical Torch White and mounted it with the Nordic Componants Magazine Extension Tube Barrel Clamp with Picatinny Tac Rail.

Though the Torch is supposed to be a "backup light", I took the risk and am pleased that the "white LED" model will illuminate the longest distance inside my house. It is far from blinding, but I can see what is there clear enough for what I need it to do.

Shotgun suspended on a wall in my office using two Tac-Mag Gun Magnet. It's in a spot that a different shotgun usually is.

Below is a photo of the gun itself, and details of the light setup. On the closest in, you can see where my dachshund was able to get ahold of the light before my clamp came in and I was able to get it mounted and safely put away .

BASS PRO SHOPS -----"NEVER AGAIN!"

I don't know what I was thinking.

I've heard the stories from friends, and decided buying a firearm from Bass Pro Shops is not something I would do.

I knew that they keep the trigger locks on. Making it pretty much impossible to get a true feel of the gun in your hand. I knew that after a purchase, they walk you to the door like a child, and Hand you your Gun outside. (Don't understand that Logic....if someone really wanted to use it, couldn't they just walk right back in with it?) . I also know that with every handgun purchase , they require you purchase a brand new internal locking device. Even if you already own several in that caliber and bring it with you. (If it's mandatory they tack $20 on to each purchase...they SHOULD tack it onto the sale price you see before buying the gun)...So ...basically...I know buying guns from Bass Pro SUCKS! (Handguns anyway)

But they did have some ammo at a decent price, so I went over there last Wednesday, found the ammo I came for. THEN THE NEXT THING I KNEW....I purchased a new handgun. I don't know what happened! I normally purchase my handguns at A&D Pawn in Glen Burnie, or order it online to a local FFL. But A&D didn't have the model I wanted , and I saw it RIGHT THERE in Bass Pro and just reacted. I've purchased 3 handguns in the last year from A&D. And after completing the Paperwork, I picked my guns up exactly 7 days from that time. In fact they tell me , since MSP changed everything around in 2014 they usually get paperwork back before they can legally hand over the firearm.

So 8 days later I stopped in to Bass Pro to pick up my new purchase . Went back to the gun counter...Gave them my name, and the rep. went to check in the back ..."No it's not in....we'll call you when it is".....I then asked how long does it normally take? The Guy said " Normally 11 BUSINESS DAYS" ....

WHAT.?....I Just left, wondering why.

It's not like I NEED THAT GUN NOW!!!..But what is the deal with that? I paid for it. Now give it to me!

I know for a fact MSP has their act together for the most part..but 11 business days? That's over 2 weeks.

Now I was one of the lucky Marylanders who purchased regulated firearms in February of 2013. So I Know what it's like to wait. I waited just about 3 months for one handgun purchase. And about went insane like a lot of us did.

I'd really like to know why Bass pro is taking so long ....most likely it's "Because they can " ...They probably have enough Newbie mall walking clientele walking through, buying their first gun to keep them selling enough that they don't have to worry about making customers happy with speedy service.

It's my guess they are selling guns , and they have their own behind the scenes documentation that goes along with sending in, and receiving the MSP paperwork, and they must let that stack up until someone does it. Who knows.

All I DO KNOW....."Never Again" ...I'll make my purchases elsewhere. Even if it costs me a lot more.

BASS PRO SHOPS -----"NEVER AGAIN!"

I've been looking for a lefty precision large bore target rifle and after I was not able to find one locally, I turned to gunbroker and found a Browning Xbolt. Straw Purchase

Hello,

I was wondering what the difference is between a straw purchase and the following...

I go to gun shows a lot and I see guys walking around carrying firearms for sale. They usually have a sign on it with all the pertinent information including sale price. Is this legal? It must be as there's a lot of it at the shows...

To be honest, I've done it myself :o a few times just assuming it is legal as no one (including the LEO's in attendance at the shows) has ever said anything to me but I'm wondering with all the changes in the gun laws lately ( both at the state and federal level) if it is considered a "straw purchase/sell ) or not and is it STILL legal?

Could someone enlighten me.

Thanks for your time.

HQL turn in if moving?

Anyone know if the hql has to be surrendered upon leaving the state? I'm moving to VA in a couple weeks and was wondering if it's like a DL and has to be turned in. Looked on MSPs website but no info. Can't access MDS from work so posting on my phone.

Introduction to NFA...

We've written a basic introduction to NFA. The idea was to give just general introductory information for someone who has no knowledge of the subject, without delving into any specific area (such as how to get them, or MD specific requirements such as 29" AOL or machine gun registration).

Your feedback would be appreciated, specifically on any technical aspect. I posted this elsewhere and I didn't realize that I'd said SBRs was a "semi-automatic rifle with a barrel shorter than 16” long." Obviously, it doesn't have to be semi-automatic.

-----------------------

[The following should be considered a general introduction, and not legal advice. Check with your local NFA specialist for laws pertinent to your locality.]

Machine guns, Short-barreled rifles, Short-barreled shotguns, Suppressors or Silencers, Destructive Devices, and a catch-all category called Any Other Weapon are categorized as Title II weapons, sometimes referred to as NFA Firearms. The sale and possession is controlled by the National Firearms Act, a law enacted by Congress on June 26, 1934, and modified by the Gun Control Act of 1968 and again by the Firearm Owners’ Protection Act in 1986. The NFA imposes a transfer tax of either $200 or $5 and makes registration of these controlled firearms mandatory.

It’s common to hear people refer to these guns as “Class III”, or to believe a special license is needed to buy them, but this is not true. Class III merely refers to a type of license needed to sell NFA firearms as a business. Any properly registered NFA firearm can be transferred to a civilian by paying for the transfer tax and going through the background check, with certain exceptions. Elsewhere we will be discussing the purchase process for NFA firearms.

We will go over the basic types of Title II weapons, and in later videos we will discuss the process of obtaining them.

MACHINE GUNS

A machine gun is any firearm that fires more than one round with a single trigger pull. This is opposed to a semi-automatic that only fires one shot per trigger pull. Machine guns can come in virtually any shape and size, from a Glock 18 handgun to an MG42 or even a registered sear.

The Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986 banned the sale of machine guns that weren’t in the registry before the date the law went into effect. Because of this artificial restriction on the sale of Machine Guns, their value continues to rise, and will so unless the law changes or people no longer want to buy machine guns. Both of these being unlikely, and because the number of transferable machine guns will decline, their values will continue to rise.

SHORT-BARRELED RIFLES

A short-barreled rifle, often referred to as an SBR, is a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16” long. What differentiates a rifle from a pistol is a buttstock.

SHORT BARRELED SHOTGUNS

A short-barreled shotgun, often referred to as an SBS, is a shotgun featuring a stock designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel shorter than 18” long.

SILENCERS

A silencer, also referred to as suppressors or moderators are a device attached to or integrated into the barrel of the firearm with the intent to quiet the report of the propellant gasses that follow a bullet down a barrel. The effectiveness of a silencer will depend on any number of conditions, including: type of firearm, type of ammunition, and environmental circumstances.

DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES

There are two broad classes of destructive devices:

The first covers devices such as grenades, bombs, explosive missiles, poison gas weapons, etc. The second covers any firearm with a bore over half an inch except for shotguns or shotgun shells. A common firearm that falls into this second category is the Striker 12 or the Cobray copy known as the Street Sweeper. These were declared as destructive devices in 1994.

ANY OTHER WEAPON

The final category of NFA regulated firearms is a sort of catch-all category called Any Other Weapon. AOW firearms only have a $5 tax, as opposed to the $200 for the other categories. AOW's are weapons or devices capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive. Many "any other weapons" are disguised devices such as pens, cigarette lighters, knives, cane guns and umbrella guns. This also covers smooth bore pistols and revolvers and pistol grip shotguns with a barrel less than 18”.

Possibility of melting the MDSP ammo brass into Liberty bells

Greeting!

This thread is dedicated to discuss the possibility of obtaining the ammo casings currently held by the MDSP into Liberty bells.

Several questions come to my mind, let's hear yours:

- how much brass does the MDSP hold?

- where is it?

- do they currently have a plan to dispose of it?

- what legal or policy red tape to do this (any)?

- where can we have it melted?

- where can we obtain a metal mold of the Liberty bell?

- is there a company that does this sort of thing?

- transportation issues?

- costs

- what size bells would you like?

- any special encryption or details?

Also appreciate any volunteers or leads to get some of these things done.

This may not be possible, but would like us to discuss and consider the merits as well.

NH Now Honors AK & OH. . . State Updates! New Hampshire has added Alaska back on the list of states it honors. NH removed them late last year and gave no reason. They didn’t give a reason for adding them back either. They have added Ohio to the list of states they honor. http://ift.tt/1tNOgAE

Tennessee – Effective May 15. Reworded parking lot storage law so employees can’t fire a person with a permit keeping their firearm in their locked vehicle on company property. They passed the law previously and the AG put out an opinion stating, they would not be breaking a law but an employer could still fire an employee for keeping a firearm company property if it was against their policy. This law change fixed that.

West Virginia - Effective Around June 10. Permit holders can keep their firearm in their locked vehicle on the Capitol Complex. Cleaned up what is considered a Loaded Firearm and carrying a firearm for defensive purposes while hiking in the woods etc. The Governor vetoed Permitless Carry and since the Legislature session ended an override was not possible under WV law. There is a good chance Permitless Carry will come to West Virginia next year.

Idaho - Effective July 1. Limited Permitless Carry. Carry outside the limits of an incorporated area does not require any type of permit/license to carry. Rewrote their carry laws to make it easier to understand.

Kansas - Effective July 1. Permitless Carry. Allows staff to carry in Schools or other city, county or state buildings if their policies allow it even if posted with proper signage.

Mississippi – Effective July 1. Limited Permitless Carry. No Permit needed to carry in a Purse, Briefcase, Fanny Pack. From Handgunlaw.us reading of the law anything that completely encloses the firearm and is carried in the hand or by a strap over the shoulder or around your body outside your clothing would meet the definition of the law. Lowered the cost of permits.

Michigan – Effective December 1. Concealed Weapon Licensing Boards will be disbanded and the County Clerk will handle all applications. No more going before the board to get their OK. Meet the requirements and supply the proper documentation and the Clerk will issue the permit.

There are still many good bills in the different states under consideration at the time of this post. The above will be added to their states pages when their new laws take effect. NH, AK and OH updates will go up late tomorrow evening or early Friday.

TV Gun Guy in trouble with FEDS

Rich Wyatt, one-time star of the American Guns TV show, turned himself in on theft charges several days ago in a case involving a rare pistol that a consignor reported he could not get back from Wyatt's Gunsmoke Gun store.

The pistol was apparently found during an ATF raid that was part of unrelated investigation.

It's yet another drop-down for a guy who was flying pretty there for awhile.

New product for 2015 as seen at the NRA Show in Nashville

Hello from Balto. Co.

Hello everyone, I've been lurking for some time and a member for a few weeks. I am a member of AGC and like shooting rifle, shotgun and pistol. I have several AR builds in progress. Thinking about maybe building an AK in the future. I will be attending an Appleseed in the near future.

Hello from Balto. Co.

Refund Timeframe

I know there were several members who got denied with the recent SBR "misunderstanding", has anyone actually gotten their money back yet?

Its been over 100 days since my SBR denial Back in January. Still no refund. I tried to call last Friday and as soon as I said I was inquiring about a refund status, the guy transferred me to a number that didn't even ring - just went straight to voicemail. So I left a message, but no one has called me back. (didn't really expect anyone too).

Over 3 months is a little ridiculous.
